Tuesday, 15 September 2009

Speaker: Michael Chance, Vanderbilt University

Title: Hamiltonian S^1 actions I

Abstract: We will discuss the use of J-holomorphic curve techniques to obtain information about symplectic manifolds which admit

Hamiltonian $S^1$ actions.  We will also discuss some generalizations to certain elements of $\pi_1(Ham(M, \omega))$.

Speaker: Michael Chance, Vanderbilt University

Title: Hamiltonian S^1 action II
Abstract: see above

Tuesday, 29 September 2009

Speaker: Michael Chance, Vanderbilt University

Title: Hamiltonian S^1 actions III
Abstract: see above

Wednesday, 30 September 2009, Topology and Group Theory Seminar

Speaker: Mike Chance, Vanderbilt University

Title: Degenerate Maxima of Hamiltonian Loops
Abstract: We will discuss topological results of manifolds admitting Hamiltonian circle actions as well as those admitting
certain Hamiltonian loops. We will also discuss the Hofer geometry associated to certain symplectic 4-manifolds.

Speaker: Ioana Suvaina, Vanderbilt University

Title: Symplectic surgeries on 4-manifolds
Abstract: We will discuss the symplcetic sum construction, by following Gompf's paper
"A new construction of symplectic manifolds" (Ann. of Math. (2) 142 (1995), no. 3, 527--595)

and several applications.

Speaker: Ioana Suvaina, Vanderbilt University

Title: Symplectic surgeries on 4-manifolds, II
Abstract: A second surgery, the rational blow-down, will be introduced, with applications on the
geography of symplectic 4-manifolds, as well as exotic smooth structures on manifolds with
small topological invariants.
