Exams: Exams will be given on each of the following dates:

    1. Friday, September 19 on Sections 13.1 - 13.7, 14.1 - 14.3
    2. Friday, October 17 on Sections 14.4, 15.1 - 15.7, 16.1 - 16.2, 17.1, 17.6
    3. Friday, November 14 on Sections 16.3, 16.4, 16.7, 16.8, 17.2 - 17.4
Final Exam: A comprehensive final exam will be given on

In addition to the material covered on the first three tests, the final exam will also cover Sections 17.7 - 17.10. An alternate final exam will not be given.

Quizzes: Nine short quizzes will be given at the beginning of class on each of the dates listed in the syllabus below. In general, make-up quizzes will not be given (see make-up policy below). However, you will be able to "drop" two quiz grades.

Make-up Policy: Make-up quizzes will not be given unless you have more than two officially excused absences. You must be in attendance for the three tests and the final exam unless you have an official school excuse, or a medical excuse from a doctor. Talk with me as soon as possible if you will be missing an exam or quiz.

Recommendation: Before each class meeting, read (or, at  least, read over) the sections that we will be covered.

Cell Phone Warning: You will not be allowed to attend class if you have a telephone, or any other electronic device, that disturbs the class in any way.

Homework: Homework is assigned daily and discussed at each class meeting. You are encouraged to work together with classmates on homework.

Grades: The quizzes count 20% of your final grade. The three tests will count 20% each (for a total of 60%). The final exam will count 20%. Homework, class participation and attendance may be used to decide borderline cases (at my discretion). Your final grade will be based on 500 points as follows:

Grade Percent Points
A 93 - 100% 460 - 500
A- 90 - 92% 450 - 459
B+ 87 - 89% 440 - 449
B 83 - 86% 410 - 439
B- 80 - 82% 400 - 409
C+ 77 - 79% 390 - 399
C 73 - 76% 360 - 389
C- 70 - 72% 350 - 359
D+ 67 - 69% 340 - 349
D 63 - 66 % 310 - 339
D- 60 - 62 % 300 - 309
F below 60% 0 - 299

Attendance: Attendance is expected for each class meeting. More than two absences will
be considered "excessive" on the mid semester progress reports. See the College of Arts and Science policy on class attendance in the University Bulletin.

Syllabus: We will cover most of the material from Chapters 13-17.

Calculators: You are encouraged to use a calculator doing the homework exercises. However, my quizzes, tests and examinations are designed to be done without a calculator and no calculators will be allowed for these.

Honor System: Vanderbilt's Honor Code governs all work in this course. Students are encouraged to work together on the homework assignments and to study quizzes and examinations from previous semesters. You will be required to write and sign the honor pledge on each graded assignment. That pledge is "I pledge on my honor that I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this assignment."
